Going to the Oval

I am now in Guyana until Wednesday. My sister and brother-in-law bought cricket tickets a while ago and we’re off to the new Providence Stadium to see West Indies vs Sri Lanka. I didn’t know that this was the match that was scheduled for the 1st. I just chose between the 1st and the 7th. [...]

Caribbean Airlines, Caribbean Beat

It took me a few weeks, but I finally made it onto an official Caribbean Airlines flight. It wouldn’t usually take me this long, since I did travel some usual routes during the period, but Caribbean Airlines has changed theirs! I am still unclear on the exact new routes, but I do know that Trinis [...]

‘Id ul Adha, creating traditions

This is my second ‘Id ul Adha in Guyana. At least this year my sister and niece were also here; last year sister the elder was in Trinidad, bearing the niece in her belly. I seem to be creating new traditions for myself, and these will be reflected in the recipes I will be posting [...]

Alien Cows Set To Take Over the World

I know. The title sounds bizarre. Very tabloid-ish. But I have a theory. So bear with me. Before this week, I thought I had fully experienced the Guyana cattle-on-the-road phenomenon that has become part of my daily life. After all, when large cows essentially act as backup to official police/military roadblocks, their reposed bulks forming [...]

Kaieteur Falls in Guyana

Kaieteur Falls This is the world’s largest single drop waterfall – 741-foot drop. And I finally made it to see this in the middle of the rainy season, when it’s at its most awesome, and still the day was sunny and clear. Excellent timing. See more pictures of my trip.

unpacking again…

I opened up the last of my non-book boxes today, so now I think I have everything. I haven’t found a few things, but I am sure they are wrapped and stuck in the box marked “bag and pictures” which I think means my framed certificates (which are going nowhere, I told my mother I [...]

Yellow Hibiscus

Yellow Hibiscus When I first got my camera, I took many many flower pictures – why not, since my landlady has a very nice garden. This remains one of my favourites. I love hibiscuses. Part of my Flowers set.

Reflections on Guyanese Eating

Welcome to Guyana Since R (sister, the elder) and G (brother in law) returned to Guyana in time for Ramadan, I had the opportunity to go places to break the fast, since Ramadan is a time for feeding people, you can always bring along an extra person. When we broke fast in mosques, whether they [...]

Boxes

A 20 ft container pulled up to my door this morning. With my pots and pans, my books, some furniture, essential groceries from T&T, and most importantly, a real mattress and pillows. There were 42 boxes, 5 pieces of furniture and 1 mattress. However, at least 14 of the 42 boxes belong to my sister [...]
