Poor planning on our part as far as our trip to TnT goes. We arrived just after Eid and we left just before Divali. So we were not able to participate in the culinary feats these 2 great holidays present on the islands.

Maybe next year we'll plan better. Until then I'll have to visit a local Caribbean grocery and use your tips to make some sawine.

Or convince my sis to cook up a batch and bring when we meet for Thanksgiving dinner next Monday.

Happy Cooking

Hey aka, welcome back. My father doesn't really like almonds that much either, which we (the children) only discovered after years of Mom putting them in anything she could! I don't mind raisins too much in them, but only added on the top after, I don't like the texture when they've soaked in the warm sawine. Somehow, I've never really liked the cherries though. But tastes are individual :-D

I don't make sawine, I only eat it but I can see the rules make sense. I had two versions of sawine this eid and though each had distinctive flavors, they were both good. None of the sawine makers wanted to share the recipe in writing and I understand, when it comes to food, it's difficult to write everything down to perfection. I like the cherry flavor in sawine but not too much the almonds. I have many unopened, small tins of Ghee and don't know where they came from. I will tell you later how your recipe compare :)

Hi Yasmin, thanks for the comments! Sorry the heavy whipping cream didn't work for your barfi - Lilandra didn't have access to the Nestle's cream where she was in the US and she made it with that. Don't know if the brand or something matters.

TB - I seriously never hear that story! You hid it well till now :-) We have to find a way to get some sawine to you to boost your spirits and intentions to try it again! I will let you in on a little secret - the 2nd time I made sawine by myself, when I was in Edinburgh, for an Eid dinner I was having, I didn't mix the milks properly before heating and the condensed milk settled on the bottom and the next thing I know I was smelling BURNING. I tried to save the milk and poured the non charred bits out of the pot, but I had no more milk to boil and people were on their way, so the sawine had this real smoky flavour...

It's no secret that I love the sawine that I get from your family home when I visit at Eid! Ah, yum!!! (how many times have I taken extra on the pretense of sharing - Opps!!!)

Anyway, let me now share the time I tried to do it myself -- by myself and for myself (I thought why wait for the Chennettes {sic!} when I can try this without them) BOY - the horror!!! From parching (not paatching - I was going wrong already...) the vermicelli to a deep black colour to spoiling the milk to a gloppy consistency that not even the dogs would smell, I decided that the Chennettes had years of experience and your family's sawine is best worth the wait! (I probably never shared this incident with you!) LOL!!!

Now I see why it went wrong from the jump, I forgot to ask about the rules!! [p.s. even though you provide the recipe and the assurances that it will be grand, I fear that I shall wait until I can taste it from the hand that makes it best - the Chennettes - and that's with extra nuts please!!!!] :-)
