Checking Voter Registration online

Did you know there was a website where you could check your voter registration in Trinidad & Tobago? I don’t know who VoteTTnow is, but they say the information is based on the EBC data. It is really cool, because now I know that I am in one constituency, while the people who live across the road in my village, are in another constituency. Do you know what that means? Right. We get TWO sets of campaigning to cover both sides of the road. Double announcements, mike-cars and rallies and candidates walking through our area. And the neighbours’ area, apparently. So, check your registration! And think about voting.

Circumnavigating the Globe

Secondly, Allyuh posted about Around the World for Free a few nights ago, just about when Alex Boylan an winner of Amazing Race (reality tv show that I have never really seen – my actual tv watching is constrained by my lifestyle and the whims and fancies of Guyanese tv) was heading for Trinidad and Tobago. In case you don’t know about it, Mr Boylan is attempting to go around the world. For free. Depending on the kindness of strangers, and along the way trying to show a bit of the world. He spent quite a few days in Dominica before getting a flight to Trinidad Tuesday night en route to South America. Unfortunately, the guy who showed up to meet him at Piarco was very efficient and got him on a flight to Venezuela already.

Sigh. He has a video log though, and this brings me to why I am posting this. His last vlog out of Dominica, when he was talking about Trinidad, he of course mentioned that people said it was dangerous. Sigh again. But he also said he’d been told it was a great place to visit – great music and food. And from his abbreviated vlog post before leaving Trinidad, he again manages to rave about the food. He promised to upload more detailed video and I am eager to see it. I’ve always told people they must visit T&T for the food, in fact I even have a food tour planned for friends from foreign whenever they eventually make it down here. And of course, I like it when visitors appreciate this even without my telling them… So, I hope there is indeed something about the food – akin to when Andrew Zimmern called Bake and Shark the best fish sandwich ever on Bizarre Foods‘ visit.

Of course, the video may be up on the site already…but I can’t check it here at work. And the site itself annoys me to no end. I do NOT want to feel like I have an entire operating system running in my browser, thank you very much. But, I am fascinated by this endeavour and it is something that I would watch as reality tv, if I could get it.

  1. Chennette, sorry, this has nothing to your post. I’m just leaving a reply to a comment you left on my blog earlier.

Gyul, I am always this close to having my anonymity shattered. A relative of mine almost outed me once to a coworker of his who is a very close relative of another blogger. I didn’t even know they worked together. I don’t think the co-worker picked up though.

Facebook is also another challenge. Facebook made me realize that there were old friends of mine who read my blog, so I have to be careful what I say. I also learned through Facebook the identity of a couple other bloggers, lol. I have friends in common with others. Who knew blogging could be so cloak and dagger?

But if all the people who know a little about me got together at least one of them should figure out that they know me. Besides that though, I’ve done much worse on my own to out myself – that I won’t say what it was.

Are you on Facebook? We’re probably not neighbours, but we could be Facebook friends or at least have friends in common.

Since you are a lawyer, would I ever have heard of you? You don’t need to answer that if you don’t want to. But you probably already know that – being a lawyer and all.

  2. hehe…no, I doubt you would have heard of me in that context (as a news-making lawyer) I am fairly low profile in that sense (unless you knew what you were looking for and were extremely vigilant!)
Chennette briefly joined Facebook. But realised there would be problems when actual friends who know me and Chennette would be forced to deal with 2 personalities online. Thereby increasing the possibility of outing! And I just didn’t have the energy to maintain 2 characters in every sphere of activity :-) While there is some merit for Chennette to participate in Facebook (especially since people seem to be using my doubles and roti pix willy-nilly) for now it’s just for me to connect with old friends.
I actually don’t mind if individual people know who I am, I just prefer that online there is no automatic association with what Chennette says and me…or my job.
Plus, as a lawyer, I am of course naturally paranoid!

  3. Oh, and as to whether we already know each other, or are linked on FB somehow…I think judging by your initial profile description that we are about the same age…so given the size of this country, anything is possible. I think I have more clues than you as to who I am though. I mean. People know the composition of my family. Religious practices. Travel itinerary. Freakish dislikes. It’s all here for the truly macocious.

  5. Ok. VoteTTNow seems to be shut down for the moment. EBC shut it down? Exceeding bandwidth as everyone everywhere checks in to try to make sense of the new boundaries and prepare for voting? Who knows. It was not official. It didn’t claim to be…Not sure if that means it should be shut down…who knows the rationale behind these things
